Gas South Broadway Series: Sandy Hackett’s Rat Pack at the Cobb Energy Center

The Cobb Energy Performing Arts Center is a great gem in Atlanta. The sleek and modern structure is in inviting venue.  On this night, the theatre had the buzz much like the infamous Sands Hotel in Las Vegas. They came to see them, the legends, the original “Rat Pack”, Frank, Dean, Sammy and Joey.  The performance began with a video montage highlighting each of the greats, with the finale being the implosion of the Sands. Then with an exciting light show the Rat Pack emerged.

To an adoring crowd the Rat Pack, started the show with  “Hello Again.” It was surreal to see them on stage. You really felt like the boys were back in town.

The show was divided into separate vignettes, so that each member had a turn to show off. Sandy Hackett, the son of legendary Buddy Hackett, performed as the comic of the quartet Joey Bishop.  He had the crowd rolling in the aisles. Even though many of the jokes were oldies, they were still goodies. Many of the jokes dealt blows to the dynamics of relationships between men and woman. The age old question of who is truly man’s best friend – a dog or his wife.  You’ll have to go to the show to hear what the test is.

The theatre roared when Dean Martin (Tony Basile) performed ‘That’s Amore.’ Holding on to his tumbler with some liquid gold, Dean told of his exploits in and around Atlanta.  Always looking for a good time, he was looking for a female accomplice for later in the evening. Basile is a talented and does a great Dino.

Sammy Davis, Jr, (Dezmonds Meeks) was the standard straight man at the jabs by the rest of the crew. Meeks was a 2011 contestant on the hit reality show “America’s Got Talent”, and is affectionately known as ‘the Prince of Soul’. His feet magically glided across the stage.  His rendition of Mr. Bojangles was fantastic.

The chairman of the board Frank Sinatra (David DeCosta) was in charge of the show.  The Chairman had the better part of the second act to himself as he rolled through a melody of his classic hits Come Fly with Me, The Best is Yet to Come, and You Make Me Feel So Young. You could feel the presence of Frank in the room.  No tribute would be complete without “My Way”.

This show is a great tribute to the Rat Pack and brings back the era where men were men and booze flowed freely.  An all ages show that is sure to go on for many years to come.
